Subconscious Texts
2016-2019

While living in Libya, as a child Bipasha Hayat observed the ruins of the Ancient Roman civilization firsthand. These remnants resonated with her and would later become the foundation for her art and aesthetic. It’s as though she felt these ancient remains told her own stories amongst the old stones and unidentified writing.
Bipasha’s work is the reflection of her memories resonating in her subconscious mind, written in her own alphabet, thus marking her existence on earth.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Our motivation comes from our memory. Each moment that goes by becomes a memory. We would be nothing without it.
These paintings are inspired by the area of the mind where memories are kept. I have always attempted to represent the invisible realm of my mind. My goal is to create visual representations of my recollections. I have imagined recollections as written texts since they are fictitious accounts of our acts at certain moments in time.
These are neither intentionally written texts, nor are they written in a recognized tongue. Asemic writing is the word used for this. I saw the markings I made in my subconscious mind as an endless wall concealed by darkness, which is how I discovered it to be black.
Every time we bring back memories, we shine a light on the wall of the subconscious, making the words evident.
